Quarterly Funder Spotlight · General Operating Support Partner
Each quarter, West Point School of Music (WPSoM) spotlights a partner whose support makes our work possible. This quarter, we are proud to recognize the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Foundation.
Through its Culture, Equity, and the Arts program, MacArthur awarded West Point School of Music a three-year, $240,000 general operating grant. Grantees were recommended by a panel of
participatory grantmakers.
General operating support is the most valuable kind of grant a community organization can receive. It lets us decide where each dollar does the most good: keeping instruments in students' hands, paying the teaching artists and alumni mentors who guide them, and keeping our 24,500-square-foot Morgan Park campus open all year.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation supports creative people, effective institutions, and influential networks building a more just, productive and peaceful world. Its Chicago
Commitment includes the Culture, Equity, and the Arts program, which provides general operating support to Chicago arts and arts-centered organizations. Their commitment to Chicago’s
communities aligns directly with WPSoM’s mission to ensure African American youth have equitable access to high-quality music education, cultural identity formation, and workforce pathways.

“MacArthur’s investment strengthens every part of our mission — from youth instruction and cultural programming to workforce development and organizational sustainability. Their partnership affirms the value of our work and helps us show up for Chicago’s youth with excellence, consistency, and cultural pride.”
MacArthur’s general operating support has contributed to:
For an average of 500 youth annually across Morgan Park and CPS partner schools.
Cultural and artistic excellence, including national recognition at PANFest and major Chicago performances.
Music education rooted in African diaspora composers and traditions.
Serving 84 youth, providing 1,680 meals, and achieving 100% parent satisfaction.
Instrument Repair & Steelpan Manufacturing training for nine interns, all advancing to employment, education, teaching, or military service.
Strengthening stewardship and organizational sustainability.
This year, MacArthur’s support helped WPSoM deliver high-quality instruction, cultural programming, and workforce training that directly impacts youth across Chicago’s South Side. From steelpan mastery to leadership development, students experienced growth, confidence, and cultural pride; all outcomes made possible through MacArthur’s investment in equity and artistic excellence.
