WPSoM's Steel Pan Manufacturing Plant
Panville is West Point School of Music’s steel pan manufacturing and innovation initiative. Here, the instrument moves from idea to design, from raw steel to a musical voice.
By bringing steel pan craftsmanship in-house, WPSoM is building the capacity to create, maintain and develop the instruments at the heart of our steel pan programs—while giving young people a closer look at the skill, science and artistry behind the music they perform.
Panville connects music education with craftsmanship, technology and hands-on learning. Students can see that a steel pan is not simply an instrument they receive—it is something carefully designed, shaped, marked, tuned and refined.
That exposure opens another door into the world of music: one where musicians can also become makers, technicians, problem-solvers and innovators.
Every pan begins with precision. Note layouts, fabrication, shaping, tuning, and finishing all work together to transform raw steel into an instrument capable of carrying melody, harmony, and rhythm.
Each step requires a careful balance of craftsmanship, technical skill, and a trained ear. From determining where each note will live to shaping its final tone, the process is both art and science. At Panville, we are preserving this specialized craft while using modern tools and technology to help move it forward.
Manufacturing our own pans gives West Point School of Music greater control over access, cost and production. That matters as our vision grows.
Our goal is a 100-voice steel orchestra. Panville helps make that vision more achievable by expanding our ability to put quality instruments into the hands of more musicians and to grow the sound of steel pan on Chicago’s South Side and beyond.
Steel pan is one of the few modern acoustic instruments created in the 20th century. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, its development reflects generations of Caribbean creativity, experimentation and craftsmanship. Panville honors that tradition by helping students understand that the sound they hear onstage begins long before the first note is played.
The musical range and note layout are planned so each instrument has a clear purpose within the orchestra.
Steel is carefully worked, shaped and fabricated. Precision matters because every physical change affects the instrument’s final voice.
Each note must be developed and refined until the instrument speaks with the pitch, tone and resonance expected of a quality steel pan.
Panville gives WPSoM a place to explore what happens when music, engineering and technology meet. Specialized fabrication tools—including our laser cutter—allow the shop to approach production with greater accuracy and efficiency while continuing to value the hands-on knowledge that steel pan making requires.
Our laser cutting process brings digital precision into the workshop, helping Panville combine modern fabrication technology with the hands-on craft of steel pan making.
For our students, that means seeing music from another perspective. A rehearsal teaches them how to perform an instrument. Panville can help them understand how that instrument works, how it is cared for and how skilled people turn raw materials into something capable of making music.
Access to instruments directly affects how many young musicians we can serve. Developing in-house manufacturing capacity helps WPSoM reduce dependence on outside production, respond more quickly to the needs of our programs and build toward larger ensembles.
It also creates something just as important: knowledge. The skills required to build and maintain steel pans can be passed on, strengthened and shared with another generation.
Panville is not only about building instruments—it is about building people and preserving knowledge. Through internships and hands-on training, young people and emerging craftspeople gain exposure to the specialized skills involved in steel pan manufacturing, repair, tuning, fabrication, and technology.
By passing these skills from one generation to the next, WPSoM is creating pathways for youth to explore skilled trades, music technology, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship while helping preserve the craft of steel pan making.
This investment also strengthens our self-sustainability. As young people develop into skilled makers and technicians, WPSoM can expand its ability to build and maintain instruments in-house, create workforce opportunities, and ensure this knowledge continues for generations.

By bringing music education, craftsmanship, technology, and hands-on training together, we are creating opportunities for young people to become more than performers—developing makers, technicians, innovators, and future leaders of the craft.
Every instrument built, every skill taught, and every young person trained moves us toward a future where we can build our own instruments, develop our own talent, and sustain our own growth.
We are not simply building steel pans.
We are building the people who will carry the sound forward.
Students in music appreciation scored 63 Points higher on verbal and 44 Points higher on math than students with no arts participation.
