Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. –Plato

West Point School of Music provides musical instruction to youth in some of IMG_4359-200x300Chicago’s toughest south and west side neighborhoods. We offer these youth a life-changing alternative to the violence and despair they witness daily in the form of gangs, crime, and drugs. Through music, our students can dream of a brighter future and have hope for a better tomorrow.

Courtney, one of our students, offers the following about the impact of our program: “Music allows me to say things that I could never speak. Being at West Point has given me the opportunity to do something productive with my life. Before participating in the West Point School of Music program I had unrealistic dreams like becoming a veterinarian even though I was afraid of even the tiniest spider. Now I am focused on become a professional clarinetist and playing in a symphony.”

Currently, we have 140 young people enrolled in our program across four locations. In January of 2016 we will begin to offer classes at the South Shore Cultural Center as an Arts Partner in Residence with the Chicago Park District.   The students will  be taught to play an instrument from the standard wind/symphonic band family along with the steel drum.

Because many of our families struggle with securing basic necessities, we provide all the resources, equipment, and supplies these children need to participate in quality music education at no cost to their families. Our commitment is not to allow finances to stand in the way of students discovering and maturing in their gifts. In addition we also provided a safe place for our students to be outside of their homes.

You can help these children thrive through music with a donation today. We ask for IMG_4353-200x300donations of:

1) new or used musical instruments, including any from the standard wind band or symphonic band family;

2) other equipment, such as music stands, reeds, method books, solo and ensemble material, and other sheet music; and/or

3) a personal financial donation or a sponsorship from your company that would be used to purchase compensate instructors, purchase instruments and provide supplies. All donations are tax-deductible and we can pick up instruments and equipment at your convenience.

Thank you for considering the opportunity to inspire change by your gift. Please feel free to contact us for more information about our program. We can be reached at (773) 303-7040 or
